My tonsils were also removed at this cottage hospital, but about ten years earlier, at least before the NHS started. My memory is rather more mundane than Sputnick. It is having stitches in my mouth with long ends of suture fixed to my cheeks with plaster, and being treated to ice cream.

1957 I had my tonsils removed at this hospital. The ward had about twelve beds and they were full at the time. Matron's father lay oppisite my bed. Then it happened. The Russian sputnik flew over the hospital, only empty beds remained as those that could walk carried those who could not. We stood outside watching the trail light the sky. When it was over those who dared, including me, went over to the Green Man pub and celebrated the moment much to the horror of matron who demanded our return at once or else. Ah the memories.
